Crazy Quilt Talk – Preservation and Conservation

1) Begin with an overview about crazy quilts and their construction including materials used, stitching techniques, etc. This introduction will focus on the “inherent vice” of crazy quilts. How and why crazy quilts in particular are susceptible to damages and pose preservation challenges.
2) The next section will cover proper preservation practices. This will include proper storage techniques, display options, and general maintenance of quilts. Use of acid-free materials and where to purchase the products will be included.
3) The final section will cover conservation and restoration of crazy quilts. Included will be the following:
- A definition of conservation, and the differences between conservation and restoration.
- What types of repairs might one expect to find on quilts.
- How the conservation or restoration of a quilt might affect its value as a collectable.
- What kind of cleaning / repair techniques one can perform on their own collections. What materials can be used.
- When to call a conservator.
